The Meadows Percussion Ensemble, under the direction of Jon D. Lee, presents its fall concert of new and classic works for percussion. The program opens with Christopher Rouse’s brutal Ku-Ka-Ilimoku, a savage, propulsive dance representing the Hawaiian god of war. The program will also include the world premiere of The Elysian Drift, a new work by SMU composition faculty member Lane Harder. Another featured work will be Kevin Bobo’s Hemispheres, an exploration of musical styles found throughout the world – Indonesia, India, Cuba, Spain, Japan and parts of West Africa. Two works by composer and UNT percussion professor Christopher Deane, a friend of the Meadows Percussion Ensemble, will also be performed. One is the intense Pyriphlegethon, a sonic representation of traveling down a river of fire, with multiple sound effects to illustrate the journey. The second is Deane’s recent Marimba Quartet #2, a work consisting of three broad canons and inspired by the rotations of spheres. On the lighter side, senior Del Cook will be featured as a xylophone soloist premiering a ragtime solo composed by his grandmother.
