Visiting Artist Lecture: MAOF

Southern Methodist University - Owen Arts Center

MAOF is an art collective based in Puerto Rico. Members salvage tropical discarded trees and other goods of biological origin to make material for design and art projects, with a focus on creating a local woodworking culture that is both sustainable and economically feasible. Part of the wood is also turned into compost for their nursery, yielding plants that can be added back to the local landscape. They have conducted projects examining the local culture of use and consumption of resources in Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Mexico and New York City.

This lecture is presented in collaboration with Ignite/Arts Dallas. It is part of the post-Hurricane Maria initiative “Respond: Puerto Rico,” an ecological and sustainable effort by local North Texas artists of Puerto Rican heritage, or otherwise, to provide the people of Puerto Rico options that will last well beyond the current relief efforts to maintain their day-to-day needs. The efforts in rebuilding Puerto Rico will last decades, and sustainable solutions are needed.
