In celebration of the 100th anniversary of the birth of Mexican writer Juan Rulfo and Costa Rican writer Alfredo Cardona Peña, Teatro Dallas will present a world premiere theatrical production of adapted short stories and contemporary dance. A predecessor of magical realists, Juan Rulfo is recognized for inspiring generations of Latin American authors such as Gabriel García Márquez. Rulfo is best known for his masterpiece, Pedro Páramo, and he received Mexico’s National Prize for Literature and the Cervantes Prize.
Cardona Peña wrote science fiction, short stories of mystery and horror, comic books, and children’s stories, but it is his poetry that earned him a reputation as one of the greatest Latin American authors of the 20th century. He received numerous literary awards, including the Continental Poetry Award and the National Award of Costa Rica.
Before the event: Enjoy a festive Mexican-themed dinner and drinks in the DMA Cafe, view the Days of the Dead altar set up by artist Sara Cardona, and enjoy a free short talk at 6:30 p.m. by Cora Cardona from Teatro Dallas about the origins and symbolism of Days of the Dead celebrations.
