The first performance of Opera in Concert’s 2017-2018 season kicks off with a tribute to education, or rather mis-education, as “School Daze” presents two hilarious operas on that theme, Christoph Fehre’s “The Schoolmaster” (long attributed to Telemann) and Chabrier’s “Une Education Manqueé” (“An Incomplete Education”).
“The Schoolmaster”, composed in 1751, features an inept professor (John Kuether, bass-baritone) attempting to control a class of unruly students. Chabrier’s opera focuses on a young married couple whose education lacked a crucial subject – “the birds and the bees”! Many French operas include a “pants” role for mezzo soprano, but in this case, the role of Count Gontran is sung by soprano Jocelyn Hansen, with Lauren McNeese as his bride Helene. Baritone Edward Crafts is Gontran’s neglectful and tipsy professor Pausanias. “The Schoolmaster” will be sung in English and “Une Education Manqueé” will be in French with spoken dialogues in English. Music Director Stephen Dubberly leads the performance in Kurth Hall at the Sammons Center, at 8 pm on Friday, November 17, 2017.
