Studio Portrait Lighting Intensive

Dallas Center for Photography

From the simplest of lighting set-ups to the most complex configuration, the starting point of any lighting formula is the key light. Knowing how and where to place the primary light source is crucial. This is where we will begin in Studio Portrait Lighting Intensive.

In this intensive workshop we will cover what kind of modifiers you should use, where the light should be placed, how far away from the subject, from the background and more. On day one you will learn how to competently use a single light source (this includes a technical introduction to the studio, to flash, the use of trigger devices, meters, etc.) and by mid-afternoon you will begin to see first-hand just how creatively flexible single source lighting can be. Demonstrations will take up about two thirds of the day and the remainder will be spent setting up your own shots in our studio.

On day two we will expand the repertoire. You will learn how to use reflectors and add fill lights. You will learn various ways to light a background. You will also learn about “feathering” and “edge lighting” and how to approach and interact with a subject. Then you will put all of this knowledge to the test with real models!

Studio Portrait Lighting is an action packed introduction to both the studio and to the fundamentals of lighting in this environment.
