In the Blood reimagines elements of Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter in a modern setting. Hester is now a woman living in poverty with her five children. She decides to ask the various fathers for assistance, with tragic consequences. Playwright Suzan-Lori Parks has won numerous awards and honors, including a MacArthur “Genius” Grant, a Guggenheim Fellowship and a Tony Award. In the Blood, which premiered in 1999, was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in drama.
