SYZYGY presents two major chamber works: Igor Stravinsky’s L’Histoire du Soldat (A Soldier’s Tale) and Wynton Marsalis’s A Fiddler’s Tale for the same instrumentation, the latter of which contains a variety of jazz and blues influences. In the C.F. Ramuz tale depicted in Stravinsky’s piece, written during World War I, a soldier trades his violin to the devil in exchange for material prosperity. In Marsalis’s version, the story, adapted by Stanley Crouch, centers around a female jazz fiddler drawn by the devil into a record deal with a producer named Bubba Z. Beals. The fiddler’s search for freedom culminates in the creation of music of true beauty in a series of three dances. The concert will be led by master’s conducting student Nicholas Leh Baker.
