Lakeside Arts raising funds for new Public Art Sculpture

Lewisville Grand Theater

Lakeside Arts Foundation is leading a fundraising drive for the City of Lewisville’s first work of Public Art, a 20 foot-tall kinetic sculpture to be installed at the MCL Grand Arts Center’s southeast corner, near Main and Charles Streets. Local artist Daren Fagan is designing and creating the sculpture featuring a stylized plant-like kinetic piece, with welded steel “leaves” topped by a colorful “flower” that spin slowly with the wind.  The metal sculpture, which will be dedicated to retired MCL Director, Jim Wear, sits atop a four-sided, nine foot-tall, pyramid pedestal with colorful glass mosaics, created by the Visual Art League and citizen volunteers inset into each side.

Initial funding for the sculpture came from the Greater Lewisville Arts Alliance (GLAA), made possible by a generous gift of $10,000 from Total Wine and More of Lewisville. Christi Martin, current Chair of Greater Lewisville Arts Alliance and Executive Director Lakeside Arts stated, “GLAA wanted to donate a large work of public art for Lewisville, using the initial grant of $10,000, aware it was not enough to purchase a completed large-scale sculpture. After brainstorming, we chose to use local artists and resources we had to get this project rolling. Daren Fagan had created some amazing kinetic works of art with scrap steel and found objects and he was excited about the opportunity.

However, after two years of planning and designing, steel and construction prices had nearly doubled, increasing money needed to twice what GLAA had. Because Lakeside Arts Foundation (LAF) already had the mechanism in place to raise funds for a project of this type, and were members of GLAA, they were both positioned and delighted to help in making this beautiful work of art possible for the citizens and visitors of Lewisville to enjoy.”

The Lakeside Arts Foundation team consequently registered with North Texas Giving Day, which takes place on September 7, and provides some additional matching funds for contributions donated that day, allowing contributions to be maximized. Donations of any size will be gladly accepted by LAF any time from now to the October 15 deadline. Donors who contribute $50 to $99 will be recognized on the Lakesidearts.org website and will have their names etched into bricks around the perimeter of the sculpture. Donations of $100 or more will be recognized, according to donation level, on a bronze plaque at the base of the sculpture and other benefits, depending on the level of the donation.
