Alison Jardine: Objects from a Future Past

Erin Cluley Gallery

ERIN CLULEY GALLERY is pleased to announce an exhibition by Dallas-based artist ALISON JARDINE on Saturday September 9th, 2017, at 414 Fabrication Street, with a book signing from 5:00-6:00pm and a reception to follow from 6:00-8:00pm. The exhibition is Jardine’s first solo with the gallery.

“My aesthetic might seem, at first glance, to be a dissonant one: modern landscape painting with industrial, urban cement. Dichotomies and contradictions appeal to me, as I believe that there is an opportunity for real understanding at the perimeters and intersections of opposing ideas.”

Alison Jardine’s current series Urban Flora are cement casts of plastic bags found in suburban creeks. Pushing what is possible with cement, Jardine has developed a custom support method and has discovered ways to embed drawing materials such as charcoal and bright pigments within the cement itself. Her attraction to both minimalist and post-minimalist practices brings together a body of work where she has sought to eliminate that which is unnecessary – reducing and distilling the works to achieve a deeper truth or essence.

Environmental concerns and a love for nature drives Jardine’s work conceptually – an exploration of the contemporary experience of landscape. As the objects Jardine makes will not biodegrade, she envisions them being excavated by archaeologists far into the future, investigating the strata and questioning what these objects are and why they were made.
