Street Photography Workshop

Dallas Center for Photography

Join Dallas-based photographer Alex Hakimi for a truly unique filmstyle photography workshop focused on creating compelling documentary and street images. Alex has used film as his primary medium for the past several years. He believes that shooting digital in filmstyle can have a profound impact on the way we approach photography.

How do you shoot filmstyle with a digital camera?
Alex and his assistant will hand out memory cards for your digital camera that have just enough space left to shoot about 36 raw images. Then they will gently tape up your LCD display so you can’t review or delete your shots. You now have a digital version of a film camera! At the end of each shooting session, Alex will collect your memory cards and you won’t see your photos until the final session.

The schedule:
The workshop will take place over three sessions in one week. You will meet in the evening on the first day for an in-depth lesson on documentary and street photography and the benefits of shooting it filmstyle. We will examine the work of influential documentary photographers such as W. Eugene Smith, Joel Meyerowitz, Sam Abell, William Allard and Martin Paar. The requirements for the following two shooting sessions will also be covered in detail.

The second day we will be shooting at the State Fair of Texas. We’ll meet at the Inwood DART station and ride together to the fair, shooting along the way. Once we arrive Alex will start with a review of special techniques applicable to documentary and street photography. The rest of the afternoon the group will shoot this iconic event alongside Alex. Cost of entry, lunch and parking (if applicable) is not included in the workshop fee.

The third and final day will start with on-location shooting at Trader’s Village in Grand Prairie with Alex. After lunch you’ll head back to DCP for image editing. Alex will discuss his personal editing process and Lightroom workflow. The group will also examine the contact sheets of several master photographers to better understand the methodology behind image selection. This will be followed by an editing session in which each participant will prepare a series of photographs from those made over the course of the workshop. The workshop will conclude with a final presentation and critique of each student’s work.
