The Hobbit: the Battle of the Five Armies Screening

Fans of J .R. R. Tolkien and Lord of the Rings enthusiasts can celebrate the eightieth anniversary of Tolkien’s The Hobbit, with two Tolkien-themed events this September at Garland libraries.

The first event, held at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 14 at the Central Library will consist of a screening of the 2014 film The Hobbit: the Battle of the Five Armies. In this installment of the popular film series, hobbit Bilbo Baggins and his compatriots must go to war to prevent Lonely Mountain from being consumed by a rising darkness.

The film is rated PG-13, but due to extended sequences of intense fantasy action violence and frightening images this event is recommended for adults. Children may attend if accompanied by an adult. Parents may consult IMDB.com or commonsensemedia.com to make an informed decision on whether The Hobbit: the Battle of the Five Armies is appropriate viewing for their families. Popcorn and water will be available while supplies last.

The second event, takes place at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 16 at the South Garland Branch Library, and features guest speaker Dr. David Oberhelman of Oklahoma State University. Oberhelman has given many presentations on Tolkien and fantasy literature in general. For this event he will provided an overview of Tolkien’s life and his major works.

These events are open to adults ages 18 and older. Children may attend with an adult.
