Sammons Jazz: Band Stand

Sammons Center for the Arts

Sammons Jazz continues its season of recognizing jazz legends with a concert dedicated to musicians who were also bandleaders. The Jazz Vibe Gang — vibraphonists Joey Carter, Dana Sudborough, and Ed Smith, drummer Dennis Durick, and bassist Carl Hillman — honor their favorite jazz vibraphonists and bandleaders such as Lionel Hampton, Milt Jackson, and Bobby Hutcherson in the opening set.
Drummer Stockton Helbing, who toured with Maynard Ferguson, leads his own septet in the second set to pay homage to the music of the trumpet virtuoso and bandleader. Joining Stockton are Ken Edwards on trumpet, Micah Bell on trumpet, David Lown on tenor sax, Carl Lundgren on trombone, Josh Hanlon on piano, and James Driscoll on bass.

Sammons Jazz is held at the Sammons Center for the Arts, 3630 Harry Hines at Oak Lawn. Tickets are $45 per person and include beverages, a light meal, and valet parking. Sammons members receive a $5 per ticket discount. Doors open at 7:00 p.m.; the concert begins approximately at 7:30 p.m. There are two performance sets of about 40 minutes each with an intermission between. Dress is casual; some people come in business attire, but most wear casual, comfortable clothing.

Tickets go on sale Monday, August 14. For tickets or more information, call the Sammons Center at (214) 520-7788. All major credit cards are accepted. All artists and programs are subject to change.
