Sammons Jazz continues its fall season with esteemed trumpeter Ephraim Owens and his band — Sean Giddings on piano, Andrew Griffith on drums, Daniel Durham on bass, and Shelley Carrol on sax — in a celebration of the 100th birthday of John “Dizzy” Gillespie. The extraordinary jazz trumpeter/bandleader was born on October 21, 1917.
Percussionist and Puerto Rico native Jorge Ginorio and his Latin Jazz Group — David Lee Schloss on woodwinds, Larry Spencer on trumpet and flugelhorn, Tony Palos on piano, Efren Guzman on drums, and Jeff Plant on bass — perform a lively second set that Gillespie, “The Ambassador of Jazz” who popularized Afro-Cuban jazz, would have admired.
Sammons Jazz is held at the Sammons Center for the Arts, 3630 Harry Hines at Oak Lawn. Tickets are $45 per person and include beverages, a light meal, and valet parking. Sammons members receive a $5 per ticke discount.
