This four-part course, led by local printmaker Kazuko Goto, will teach the traditional process of Japanese woodblock printing. Japanese woodblock, also known as moku hanga, is an 18th-century printmaking process unique to Japan which revolutionized color printing. In tandem with the Crow Collection’s new exhibition, Styled with Poise: Figures in Japanese Paintings and Prints, students will learn the process, its history, and its contemporary uses. Participants will receive instruction in carving, color registration, inking, and hand printing techniques and learn about traditional tools and materials, including how to create nori paste for making inks.
At the end of the course, students will design and print an edition of multi-color prints, leaving with the materials and ability to continue their practice at home.
Course price includes: a five-piece set of carving tools, shina plywood, Japanese fiber paper, watercolor inks, and an inking brush. Free four-hour parking will be provided for Friends of the Crow Collection for each session.
About the Artist:
Kazuko Goto was born and raised in Kyoto, Japan. She moved to the United States to study fine arts at a small community college in Rock Springs, Wyoming in 1993. After receiving her Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Wyoming in 1999, Kazuko moved to Irving, TX to pursue a Master of Fine Arts in Printmaking at the University of Dallas. During her time at the University of Dallas, she found her love for moku hanga (Japanese woodcut). The intimacy of the moku hanga process helps her transfer her ideas into images. Kazuko also feels moku hanga brings a deep connection to her home country, Japan. Besides printmaking, Kazuko enjoys spending her time in the garden and in the kitchen baking breads.
This course takes places Tuesdays in September – 9/5, 9/12, 9/19, and 9/26 from 6:00-9:00 pm.
