Sudeshna Baksi-Lahiri, Ph.D. seeks to analyze the socio-historical context of Islamic practices as they inform the politics of gender in Islam, including the practice of hijab and the banning of ‘burkini’ as swimwear by the French; the underlying Islamic symbolism of keeping facial hair among men; and all-male public displays of religious celebrations.
