This beginning workshop is limited to 8 participants
Get a glimpse into the remarkable colors natural dyes have to offer. Participants will explore historical and regional dye plants that give the primary colors. With the use of mineral salts and over dyeing, infinitely more colors can be created. In this introductory class, students will learn how to prepare wool, silk, cotton and hemp yarn for dyeing, along with mordanting, dye extraction, growing and responsible harvesting, historical information and so much more. Students will leave with many naturally dyed skeins of yarn and will be equipped to explore other dyes.
DAY ONE: Mordant/Tannin & Yellows
Date: Saturday, August 19, 1–6pm
Participants will learn how to prepare animal and plant fibers for natural dyeing through the process of mordanting. Mordants not only help fix the dye to the fiber but can also alter the color. We will also explore Osage Orange and Marigold as sources of yellow dye along with discussing many other plants that offer yellow.
DAY TWO: Reds & Blue
Date: Sunday, August 20, 11am – 5pm
Students will learn the process of preparing madder root & cochineal bugs for dye baths that will give a variety of reds and purples. We will also create an organic indigo vat to experience the magic of natural blues. Over dyeing will be covered as well so students can see the variety of possible color creations.

Instructor Bio:
Casey Galloway is the Fiber Department Coordinator at Southwest School of Art where she teaches advanced weaving and dyeing. She has owned and operated Wool Tree Yarn, a natural dye yarn company, with partner Linda Bond Thomas since 2011 and began Hand Eye Textiles, a natural dye and hand woven/American made garments and home goods company, in 2016. Also a conceptual artist, Casey examines memory and change through different processes in fiber and installation.
