Opening Reception - Joshua West: I, A Stranger

Haley-Henman Gallery

This is Mr. West's second solo exhibition at Haley-Henman.  For this exhibition he focuses on portraiture with abstract elements.  While the representational aspects of his work suggests portraits of individuals caught in a moment of time, infused with vivid color and abstract mark making, he suggests the internal and external forces that shapes us all.  They are not posed studio subjects but appear as images drawn from the artist's own photography and collected from social media.  The transformation of these images from the digital to a painted expression opens the door to view these people as part of us.  As, Joshua West says, "To gaze into the human portrait is an exercise in empathy and a unique form of human connection.  Just as the painting is a vehicle for expression by the artist, it becomes an expression of the viewers who bring a lifetime of memories to the image." Transcending particular times and places, we might see in some of these faces the suffering caused by global wars, but these paintings also affirm universal themes of the human experience.

The opening reception is Saturday, June 3 from 5-8 p.m. Exhibition on display through July 8.

Gallery hours are Thursday, Friday and Saturday 12-5pm.  Location is 422 Singleton Boulevard, Dallas 75212.
