Monet Before Monet

Kimbell Art Museum

This lecture will take the unusual stance of looking at Claude Monet’s entire pictorial career through the lens of the artist’s caricatural production. Focusing on Monet’s beginning as a graphic artist—as a producer of lines, graphs, and glyphs—the lecture will address the artist’s continuous exploration of painting as a form of writing, painting as an expansion of the act of signing. Joachim Pissarro will examine Monet’s very distinct signatures, rich with meanings and associations, and seek to demonstrate that these signatures embody his whole act of painting. Evening lectures by distinguished guest speakers, held throughout the year, address a range of topics relating to the appreciation and interpretation of art. They are free and open to the public. Seating is limited.
