Rebirth in the Garden: A Performance Installation

Haley-Henman Gallery

Rebirth in the Garden is a performance installation written and directed by Terrance Brooks.  For this production he is working with Dustin Box's visual design and costume, and the actors:  Caroline Turner Cole, Alex Eakin, Bri Praslicka, and Cain Rodriquez.  Brooks mixes the anthropomorphic ideas of the omnipotent Creator and Mother Nature with the powerful representational force of human evolution in the setting of the twenty-first century Garden of Eden.  Books' work asks questions about the relationship between human beings and the natural world, and the urgent need to protect the environment.  The central question concerns the mechanisms of artificial intelligence in the way humans might liberate themselves from the cycles of birth, sickness, old age and death.  In this regard, Brooks confronts our assumptions about patriarchal attitudes through representations of gender.  He explores the influences of language on our beliefs and perceptions about spirituality.  The performance installation dramatizes creationism's powerful and poetic influence on Western society, through the philosophical lens of transcendentalism and the brutal phenomenon of modern technological achievements.
