This is a compelling and sensitive drama concerning three cancer patients who have agreed to live in cottages on hospital grounds. The action takes place over a period of 24 hours where each is attended to and visited by family and friends. Each patient has agreed to participate in interviews with a psychiatrist who talks, not only the patients, but their visitors as well. Through humor and hard questions, they deal with their situations and leave the audience reminded to make a conscious decision about what to do with each moment that is lived. Celebrated by critics for its insight, perceptiveness, and humor in dealing with delicate subject matter, the work earned both a Pulitzer Prize and a Tony Award in 1977.
The intimate space of the POINTBank Black Box Theatre is particularly suited for staging a play that takes such a close, personal look at people at their most vulnerable. Audience members can easily imagine that they are visiting friends and questioning along with them, “Who am I and what is my existence about?”
