Charles M. Russell’s Watercolors: An Examination

Amon Carter Museum of American Art

Jodie Utter, the Amon Carter’s conservator of works on paper, recently completed the first comprehensive examination of artist Charles M. Russell’s watercolor paintings. Listen as she shares the highlights, both expected and surprising, of her discoveries after using a variety of analytical instrumentation to examine Russell’s papers, pigments, techniques, and tools. After the lecture, Utter will be joined by coauthor Rick Stewart, Russell scholar and former director of the Amon Carter, for a Q&A session. Both authors will be available after the program to sign the Amon Carter’s landmark publication on the project, available in the Museum Store.

Charles M. Russell (1864-1926) was a beloved American artist at the turn of the twentieth century. He worked in a variety of media, including sculpture in wax, clay, and bronze; painting in oil; and with watercolor. A prolific artist, it is believed that he produced some 3,000 works in his lifetime, 1,100 of them watercolors. Western scholars have written extensively about his oil paintings and bronze sculptures, leaving his watercolors largely unstudied until now.

Reservations are required. Registration for this program opens February 1. Call 817.989.5030 or email [email protected] to register.
