Ro2 Art is pleased to present "Someone You May Know" featuring new paintings by Dallas-based artist, Cuyler Etheredge. The reception will be held Thursday, January 21, from 6-8pm
ABOUT THE WORK
In the last few years my painting has evolved from individual portraits—usually of people I know—to groups of strangers in public places: a street corner in Madrid, a DART station in Dallas, a pier in Santa Monica, the Domino Sugar Factory in Brooklyn. I keep my iPhone in my pocket, and when I see a potentially interesting cluster, I take a photo. These photos are not meant to be the ”decisive moments” of an Henri Cartier-Bresson. They are ordinary moments, unguarded, and open to my exploration of the quotidian details of the figures’ lives. A little boy’s G.I.Joe band aide; a young woman’s Celtics baseball cap; an art lover’s motorcycle helmet. I’ve often wondered what their reaction would be if these unwitting subjects recognized themselves in my work. Astonished? Pleased? Annoyed? Somehow more real to themselves? As for me, I relish getting to know them as I paint them; it’s akin to falling in love. And how about you? Is this someone you may know?
