March brings about the highly anticipated Jazz Age Sunday Social, and this year The Kessler is hosting a pre-party with the Matt Tolentino Band, featuring special guest Drew Nugent from Philadelphia.
Matt Tolentino has built his name around his orchestra, Dallas favorite the Singapore Slingers, who frequently perform at The Kessler. Matt is a leading performer of pre-swing American popular music and early jazz, as well as a historian, archivist, and collector of sheet music, band arrangements, and 78rpm records. He is the founder of The Singapore Slingers, one of the founders of the Art Deco Society of Dallas, as well as the Jazz Age Sunday Social - an event which brings the vintage-inspired lawn parties to Dallas every year, along with the music and culture of the 1920s. The Singapore Slingers have performed the last two New Year’s Eve celebrations at The Kessler to sold-out audiences, in addition to many other great concerts, including their album release party in 2014. Matt has dedicated himself to preserving the music of the 1920s and 1930s with great authenticity.
Drew Nugent is the leader of Philadelphia’s premiere hot jazz ensemble. Playing cornet, trumpet, piano, and singing like none other, Drew is the genuine article. A contemporary of Matt Tolentino, Drew has made it his life’s mission to focus on the music of the jazz age – the Roaring Twenties. Around Philly, Drew and his band play weddings, festivals, private parties, clubs, and anywhere else hot dance music is requested. Drew’s wardrobe is as extensive as his musical repertoire, always appearing in true vintage garb, which lends itself greatly to the overall picture of a man totally invested in his craft. Drew works frequently with some of the greatest names in traditional jazz, and he shines bright as one of the great young artists working to preserve the American musical treasure we call the Roaring Twenties.
