Literature + Medicine

Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallas

The Literature + Medicine Conference will be on Tuesday, Jan. 19, 2016 at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallas from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.  The conference will feature Dr. Abraham Verghese who is a Physician, Educator and Author of Cutting for Stone, The Tennis Partner and My Own Country.  Dr. Verghese will be speaking on "The Pen and the Stethoscope:  Connections Between Literature and Medicine."

Literature + Medicine explores the intersection between compassion and science at the bedside.  This conference offers a unique opportunity to join prominent scholars and physicians in an interactive seminar, which investigates the connection between literary understanding and medical knowledge.  This seminar also has a broad interest for general consumers of health care today.  Upon completion of this activity, the participants should be able to relate Aristotelian story structure to medicine, connect elements of story (epiphany and metaphor) to medicine, and reflect on the nature of epiphanies in medicine.
