Paris: Inventing and Reinventing the Modern City

Kimbell Art Museum

Paris: A Metropolitan Masterpiece (1996, 29 min.); Grand Paris: The President and the Architect (2010, 50 min.)

These documentary films explore key moments in the modernization and re-envisioning of the urban landscape of Paris, from Baron Haussmann’s radical renovations in the 1860s under Emperor Napoleon III to modern-day planning for the great city’s future. Offered in conjunction with the special exhibition Gustave Caillebotte: The Painter’s Eye, these films recall the dramatic transformation of Paris witnessed by the artist, illustrate the dynamic evolution of an iconic city, and chronicle challenges in urban development. Located in the Kahn Auditorium.
