IPS: Henry R. Nau - Foreign Policy of the New President

World Affairs Council of Dallas/Fort Worth

The United States' headline-making international relationships with Mexico, the Middle East, China, Cuba and other nations are part of the campaign focus of more than two dozen people who believe they should be President of the United States. But is any candidate up to dealing with the hard choices, tradeoffs and risks in today's international climate of global economic challenges and nuclear uncertainty?

As we reach the heart of the presidential campaign early next year, the Council will examine this key global element in our International Perspectives Series with program titled ''Foreign Policy of the New President.'' Our speaker for the Friday, February 12, International Perspectives Series program is a former White House advisor who has built a reputation for following the twists and turns of international affairs, Dr. Henry R. Nau, professor of Political Science and International Affairs at The George Washington University's Elliot School of International Affairs.

He is the author of many books including Conservative Internationalism: Armed Diplomacy Under Jefferson, Polk, Truman, and Reagan. Dr. Nau, a veteran of the U.S. Army's 82nd Airborne Division (1963-65 at Fort Bragg), has also served in the public arena, dealing primarily with international affairs. He worked in the State Department (1975-77) as Special Assistant to the Under Secretary for Economic Affairs. He was a key White House advisor for the G-7 Economic Summits from 1981 through 1983 and a special summit with developing counties at Cancun, Mexico, in 1982. And from January 1981 to July 1983, he was senior staff member for international economic affairs on President Reagan's National Security Council.

Currently, he co-directs the U.S.-Japan-South Korea Legislative Exchange Program, a semiannual meeting between official representatives of the elected bodies of those governments. Part of the Part of the 2016 International Perspectives Series.
