Songs Of Our World: Three Voices of Our Last 100 Years

Music From Yellow Barn

PROGRAM Saturday, February 4

György Ligeti (1923-2006). Études
George Crumb (1929-2022). Black Angels: Thirteen Images from the Dark Land
Valentin Silvestrov (born 1937). Stille Lieder (Silent Songs)

Each work of art, every brush stroke and every note composed, is the most powerful argument we have for human existence. In the end, politics of belief and the violence that masquerades as its defender, will pale against the creative impulse and the voices that champion it.

The music of György Ligeti, George Crumb, and Valentin Silvestrov, children of the Holocaust, Vietnam, and now the war in Ukraine, is testament to this, illuminating truths already known but never before spoken, new and lasting truths waiting to be told.

"I believe that Music — even if it cannot be "sung" — is song nevertheless; it is neither philosophy nor a world view, it is the song of the world about itself, as if it were a musical testimony to existence." - Valentin Silvestrov

Valentin Silvestrov's words resonate throughout this program of discovery, parable, and memory. Soundings celebrates the music of these three distinct voices of our time.
