Anchor Points: A Collective Material Memory Project

SoMa District Fort Worth

Art Tooth, in partnership with Near Southside and Art South, is proud to present, “Anchor Points: A Collective Material Memory Project” by Michelle Cortez Gonzales now on view in the Art South container at the SoMa District micro park. The temporary installation will be on view through June 4, 2022. A public reception is scheduled Thursday, May 19th, 6-9 PM, as part of the Third Thursday Art Walk. Join us for a drink at Tinnies Mexican Cuisine next door, and then visit the piece and hear from the artist about the installation.

Anchor Points is a collaborative visual and auditory installation that speaks to the local collective memory through objects. The community was invited to share images of cherished mementos that stand as a means of maintaining a connection with a time, place or a person.

As COVID cases decline and we slowly shift into living with the Corona Virus, we are now left to evaluate how these past two years have impacted our current reality. Stemming from the need to connect with people, when physical interaction wasn’t always possible, "Anchor Points” serves as a cornerstone to honor and remember our journeys through objects that hold emotional value and connect us through the experiences bound up in them. This domestic setting features curated images of objects provided by the local community that remind us of home, stability, and comfort. Layered meanings speak to the ambivalent nature of our new normal. The use of yellow alludes to conflicting emotions of joy, optimism, anxiety and frustration; fabric-wrapped picture frames encased in resin preserve the memories of objects that anchor us in times of uncertainty and help us heal.
