Virtual Tall Tales | Making Circles

A book program designed to help us learn about the many varied cultures, landscapes, and stories of the American West past and present. Before the program, read the selected book, then join us as we gather together to engage in meaningful conversations and shared experiences.

First 10 households to register receive a free copy of the book!*

Our collection explores themes and narratives of the American West, including that of the cowboy. In fact, before pursuing a full-time career as an artist, Charlie Russell lived and worked as a cowboy on ranches in Montana in the 1880s. But what is the experience of the modern-day cowboy? Join us for the next Tall Tales as we read and discuss Making Circles: The Memoir of a Cowboy Journalist by Barney Nelson. “In Making Circles, Barney Nelson unveils working-class cowboy culture through the eyes of one who has lived the life she chronicles. From living on ranch camps to surviving both cowboy school and graduate school, Nelson’s story is a journey through time and place, pointing out that cowboys inhabit every continent and century, from Lakota Indians and Hawaiian paniolos to Argentine gauchos and Australian ringers, from Pegasus to Cervantes and Tolstoy.”

Join us for our next Tall Tales book discussion as we read and discuss Making Circles: The Memoir of a Cowboy Journalist by Barney Nelson. Please read the selected book prior to the program.
