For 22 years, Dr. Fiorillo has traveled to Alaska, including his field site at Alaska’s Prince Creek Formation. Using inflatable boats, Dr. Fiorollo traveled up and down the Colville River examining nearly vertical cliffs for fossils. While occasionally dodging falling rocks, this research can only occur during the summer months.
His discoveries suggest that dromaeosaurs used the Arctic as a place to live. Dr. Fiorolla observed, “To me, this specimen suggests that dromaeosaurs were thriving in an environment because their prey, the herbivorous dinosaurs, had also successfully adapted to an extreme environment.”
Dr. Anthony Ricardo Fiorillo is Vice President of Research & Collections and Chief Curator at the Perot Museum of Nature & Science and an adjunct professor at Southern Methodist University.
