Juror  Byrd Williams IV, 66, is an internationally exhibited photographer, and the subject of two PBS documentaries, as well as books.  The latest book, Proof: Photographs from Four Generations of a Texas Family, begins with his great-grandfather’s photography roots, in Gainesville TX in 1880.  Byrd’s work is in the collections of the Amon Carter Museum of American Art and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.  His work explores the tension between the way photographs capture moments and make them permanent and the speed with which life passes and disappears when viewed through a stack of old images.

“For me, photography is about death,” Byrd IV says in an essay in Proof. “There was always this urgency about it: save all historic buildings, remember all the faces, stand on all the street corners, save everybody’s toilet, share my experience with posterity, I was alive goddammit.”
