The Art Galleries at TCU presents Like Yesterday, the 2020 MFA Candidacy Exhibition, featuring the work of TCU’s second year Masters of Fine Arts candidates; Clint Bargers, Ashley Stecenko, Chris Wicker, and Zeke Williams. The exhibition will be on view from January 17 through February 15, with an opening reception on Friday, January 17thfrom 6-8 pm. In addition, the artists will present Gallery Talks on Saturday, January 25thfrom 2-3p m.
TCU's MFA candidacy exhibition needed to open Like Yesterday. The work in the exhibition revolves around themes of memory and recollection through means of painting, sculpture and new media.It is the culmination of the students’ first half of graduate school and shows the work they have created up to this point. Explore what they have been creating in their studios and the themes that propel their processes.
Clint Bargers presents a series of sculptures that use both found and made objects that blur the line between memory and hallucination. Taken from memories of his childhood growing up in the rural suburbs of Colorado, Bargers’ sculptures use domestic objects and furnishings to reflect the tension the “Satanic Panic” era created in suburban America during the late 1980s and early 1990s.
Ashley Stecenko’s work explores interests in family dynamics, displacement, and memory. Through a process of solvent-based photo transfers, Stecenko removes the image from its original context in order to construct a psychological space, exploring the places where emotional states collide.
Chris Wicker focuses on his past and present relationship with professional wrestling. His process involves diving into the sports entertainment media he consumed at a young age and exploring how he views and hears wrestling today. Video games, sound, video, social media, and interactivity are considered in this observation.
Zeke Williams uses his grandfather’s photographs of national parks as inspiration for the work in this exhibition. Williams uses shapes and patterns to rework the original images into more abstract compositions. Designed in Adobe Illustrator, the woodblocks are cut with a CNC router, sanded, assembled and then painted with oil-based inks.
Fort Worth Contemporary Arts is one of two galleries that comprise The Art Galleries at TCU. Students and alumni of the College of Fine Arts and guest artists exhibit at these galleries. Fort Worth Contemporary Arts is located at 2900 W. Berry St. on the edge of the TCU Campus, Fort Worth, TX 76109. Gallery Hours are Wednesday to Saturday, 12 – 5 pm, and by appointment. Admission is free.
