Remember the music scene of 1971, or if you are a youngster like me, maybe you’ve read about the music scene of 1971. That was the time when The Beatles were finding their individual musical identities, Three Dog Night, Carole King, and Rod Stewart had chart topping hits. The rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar’s album was one of the number one top albums on Billboard magazine that year, and Godspell debuted off Broadway. Godspell was the second major work for the young composer Stephen Shwartz, who went on to write the award-winning Wicked. Godspell is loosely based on the parables from the Gospels of St. Matthew and St. Luke. The show produced the popular hit “Day by Day.”
