‘On the Eve’ On The Way To New York

The little musical that could: The whimsical, time-traveling fantasy started in a Fair Park workshop in 2012, had its songs released on a CD, then debuted last year at Theatre Three. Now it’ll get a staged reading at a NYC theater festival.

A lively little musical that premiered in Dallas last year — it’s about time-travel, Marie Antoinette and the invention of the hot-air balloon, among other things — is headed for a New York theater festival in October.

On the Eve is the homegrown pop musical created by Home by Hovercraft, the North Texas music group. Seth and Shawn Magill, the husband-and-wife songwriting team, developed the whimsical fantasy with bookwriter Michael Federico. The show had a 2012 workshop in Fair Park — then Hovercraft released eight songs from the show on the group’s 2013 CD, Are We Chamelions? — before the show received its world premiere at Theatre Three.

The National Alliance for Musical Theatre has picked eight shows — including On the Eve — for staged readings at the Festival of New Musicals to be held on New World Stages. The event is open to theater industry insiders as a way to gain attention for promising new works. On the Eve will be seen with such shows as a hip-hop remix of Othello and the newest work by Duncan Sheik, the composer of Spring Awakening.
