Wynne is a Dallas music promoter who booked Brown at local clubs and eventually became his friend. He says the Godfather of Soul was “unfailingly polite” and “didn’t put on airs of any kind.”

To that end, Wynne referred to him as Mr. Brown. But later on…

“He said, ‘Hey, forget all that stuff. Just call me James.'”

If you do nothing else today, be sure to listen to the last minute or so of this week’s episode, when Wynne recounts the time that “James” called him up on stage during a show.
