I was one of those naive people who tried to get a jump on the holidays by putting my tree up the last weekend in November. Despite my best efforts, the yuletide season has flown by in the blink of an eye. True, Thanksgiving was just 19 short days ago–some of us still have Halloween candy lying about. And we did lose four prime December days to Icemagedeon. But still it feels like the season is just about over before it’s even gotten started. We’re at Def-Con 2 in the Christmas countdown and the big day is literally just days away. If you’re like me, you’re thinking, “Hey wait a minute! Slow down already!” But don’t worry, we’ve still got one more weekend to grab some fa-la-la-la.

You have one more weekend to catch Dallas Children’s Theater’s production of ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas, the story of Clement Moore’s  famous poem about St. Nick. The play features  bells, toys, Sugar Plum Fairies and holiday surprises that will sure to delight your wee theater goers.  And speaking of Sugar Plum fairies, you can also see The Nutcracker  at DCT. Kathy Burks’ magical puppets bring a new twist to Tchaikovsky’s masterpiece. Both productions run through this Sunday.

Relive your childhood with two holiday TV classics that are being revived as stage productions. You can see Rudolph and his pals come to life in a musical production of  Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer at the Majestic Theater, or catch everyone’s favorite snowman, Frosty the Snowman at Casa Mañana in Fort Worth.

If your little drama kings or queens would rather be in the play than watch it, take them to Klyde Warren park this coming Saturday morning for acting games with Dallas Children’s Theater. Afterwards, you and the tines can take a spin around the ice at the new skating rink at the park.

For a unique spin on the traditional holiday light display, bundle up the kiddos and head to the Heard Natural Science Museum & Wildlife Sanctuary for Holiday Trail of Lights.  Beside the thousands of lights, holiday decorations and carolers that you’ll see, the museum’s life size dinosaurs will also be on display along the half-mile nature trail. If a T-Rex draped in holly doesn’t put you in the holiday spirit, nothing will.

Finally, if you really want to jump into the deep end of the yuletide pool, check out TubaChristmas, an out-of-the-ordinary and extra Christmasy free concert. TubaChristmas isn’t just any holiday concert, it’s a concert composed entirely of tubas and euphoniums–over 200 at last count– that play traditional carols with a fabulous oompa-oompapa beat.  You can see TubaChristmas  at Thanks-Giving Square in downtown Dallas at noon Christmas Eve. Don’t forget to bring your funny hats and jingle bells.
