Five stories that have North Texas talking: Pecan Lodge is moving, Jaap van Zweden is staying, that winter blast was a bust, and more.

  • Jaap is staying: The Dallas Symphony Orchestra and music director Jaap van Zweden have signed a new contract to keep the conductor in Dallas through the 2018-19 season, The Dallas Morning News reported. “I am so very happy to extend my relationship with this beloved orchestra,” van Zweden said in a prepared statement. “I respect so much what they do, what they give week after week to make such wonderful music together.”
  • DTC honored by First Lady: The Dallas Theater Center was honored by First Lady Michelle Obama on Friday. The group earned a National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Award. It comes with a $10,000 prize. KERA’s Jerome Weeks with Art&Seek has more. “Since 1987, the DTC’s Project Discovery has transported  thousands of schoolchildren to live stage productions while also providing them with educational materials and backstage access.” More than 25 years ago, the DTC insisted that children be bused to the theater so that children could experience live drama and full, professional productions.
  • Pecan Lodge is moving: The oh-so-hot barbecue joint is leaving the Dallas Farmers Market and heading to Deep Ellum. We don’t know when they’re moving or exactly where in Deep Ellum. Lines have been incredibly long at Pecan Lodge. NPR visited Pecan Lodge over the summer and filed this report. It’s been ranked one of the best barbecue joints in Texas. The Dallas Observer nicknamed the place “Dallas’ Mecca of smoked meat.” The Dallas Morning News reports: “The future of the acclaimed restaurant has been cloudy since a private development group bought most of the Farmers Market from the city earlier this year. The city had been losing money operating the market, which has seemed to get emptier and more forlorn with each passing year.”
  • Expected winter blast a bust: North Texas had been under a winter storm warning – but that was downgraded to a milder-sounding winter weather advisory. We’re under that advisory until noon today. There are no weather-related closings for major school districts, although a few outlying schools will have delayed openings. Some outlying bridges and overpasses are slick. As of 7 a.m., temperatures are already at or slightly above freezing throughout North Texas. Rain and sleet was forecasted to fall overnight. Less than a quarter of an inch of ice is expected, down from a half-inch that had been predicted. Bridges and overpasses will be slick, so be careful out there. Expect highs in the mid-30s today. We’ll warm up into the 40s Tuesday and Wednesday. Catch up on our live weather blog.
