A slice of recent North Texas history makes its way into local movie houses this weekend with Dallas Buyers Club. In the film, Matthew McConaughey plays an HIV positive man named Ron Woodroof, who decides to fight the death sentence the disease promised to those who contracted it in the 1980s. McConaughey’s already receiving major Oscar buzz – buzz that’s well deserved.

Before you head out to see it, take a few minutes to study up on the real Ron Woodroof by reading Sherry Jacobson’s story from last Sunday’s Dallas Morning News. Jacobson covered the AIDS beat in the ’80s and had several run-ins with Woodruff, which she details in the story. And our friends at NPR also took a look at the real-life Woodroof last week.
