Art&Seek Jr: Round up Your Little Doggies and Head to Cowtown

by Therese Powell 18 Jun 2013 4:22 PM

Check out the Junior for fun in Fort Worth this weekend.

CTA TBD

Art&Seek Jr. is one mom‘s quest to find activities to end the seemingly endless chorus of the “I’m Bored Blues” while having fun herself. Impossible you say? Check back on Tuesdays for kid-friendly events that are fun for adults, too.

A few weeks ago at a gathering among friends, someone suggested a baseball game might be good group activity for us and our small army of  ice cream eaters.  As we batted the idea around (sorry for the pun) the group decided LaGrave Field, home of the Fort Worth Cats, would be a great choice for our baseball adventure. But as planning often happens amongst a group of easily distracted adults who have been drinking, the conversation took a sharp right and drove off in another direction when someone piped in, “Hey, isn’t the new Coyote Drive-In Theatre near there?” And just just like that,  a second road trip to Cowtown was in the works.

Yep, like Lays potato chips, when you’re planning a night out with the kids in Fort Worth it’s hard to have just one.  Here’s a sampling of fun coming up this weekend.

If you’re a fan of outdoor concerts, the Fort Worth Botanic Gardens has two this weekend that are especially family-friendly. On Friday, music from Star Wars, Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings comes to life, in their Star Wars & Beyond – A Laser Light Spectacular show. The Fort Worth Symphony will play it up big, and–hence the title–be accompanied by a laser light show that I’m sure will be spectacular. If you like your music old-school, be sure to come back to the Botanic Gardens on Saturday night for their Music of Woodstock concert. You can put flowers in your hair and embarrass the kids as you hum along to 60s music. Kids under 10 get in free and if that isn’t enough, there will be fireworks at both concerts.

Want a new twist on your visit to the museum? Check out Night at the Museum: The IMAX Experience at the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History on Saturday night. Before the screening of the film Night at the Museum in the IMAX theatre, kids get to participate in a scavenger hunt in the museum where they will encounter live animal demonstrations, historical characters and science-related activities.

Ever wanted to try out a barn dance? Well, now’s your chance. You and your older kids can show off your moves like Jagger at North Texas Traditional Dance Society’s Barn/Contra Dance Saturday night. I’m told that Contra dancing is American Folk dancing like the Virginia Reel. Don’t worry, no fancy footwork required so just about anyone can join in, but just in case you need help there are expert dancers to help you along the way.

Check out the Art&Seek Calendar for more kid-friendly events in Fort Worth or in your neighborhood.
