Ochoa says he was inspired by everything from Brancusi’s Birds in Space to the Angry Birds video game.

The Trinity River Audubon Center was once an illegal dumping ground. Now a sculptor will turn fence posts and materials salvaged from the dump into a work of art for the site.

Plans for the new work were unveiled this afternoon at the Audubon Center. Los Angeles artist Ruben Ochoa designed the piece, which also incorporates concrete and steel.

The Nasher Sculpture Center commissioned the work for its Nasher XChange program. It’s the first of 10 public works the Nasher is sponsoring to celebrate its 10th anniversary.

“The field of sculpture encompasses so much these days, and there’s only so much that we can explore within the walls of the garden or within the gallery,” Nasher Sculpture Center curator Jed Morse said. “One of the most exciting aspects of sculpture today is sculpture in the public realm.”

Ochoa’s piece will be on view starting October 19.

Ochoa will return to Dallas in October to install the piece.
