Friday Morning Roundup

by Stephen Becker 16 Nov 2012 7:45 AM

Today in the roundup: Reviewing ‘Giant’ in New York, the DSO’s two-part performance and a local musician with a big sound.

CTA TBD

TEXANS IN NEW YORK: The musical adaptation of Giant, which you may have attended in January at the Dallas Theater Center (see Jerome’s review), has made its way to New York. It opened Thursday at the Public Theater with some of the Dallas cast (Kate Baldwin as Leslie, P.J. Griffith as Jett) along for the ride. Ben Brantley was in the house, and he was left with a fairly middle-of-the-road feeling about it all. “While there’s much to praise in the ascending spirit that animates this show, gravity usually wins. It does have a way of doing that,” he writes on nytimes.com.

MUSICAL MIMICS:The Dallas Symphony Orchestra will perform the National Anthem at Cowboys Stadium on Thanksgiving Day. Sort of. The orchestra will be on the field going through the motions. But the music you hear will be recorded earlier in the day at the Meyerson. “It has to do with broadcast quality, and making sure that our sound is as HD and pristine as we can get,” Chris Shull of the DSO tells dallasnews.com.

A MAN AND HIS VIOLIN: Did you go to ArtCon 8 on Saturday and think: Who was that guy who managed to fill the room with sound with just his voice, a violin and a drum track? His name is Daniel Hart, and he’s already released three collections of music this year. And he’s just getting started. “I’m finishing up a film score right now for David Lowery’s Ain’t Them Bodies Saints, after which I’ll go back to recording my band’s new record,” Hart tells dallasnews.com. “And then we start releasing new music in January, and touring starts back up beginning of February.” In other words, you’ll be hearing plenty more from Hart in 2013.
