For some reason most of my request lately have been for dead people :/ Next week could you play something by Kathi McDonald? She passed away on the 3rd. She was a member of the Shelter People and Long John Baldry’s band back in the 70s before she went solo. Thanks

Re: Dylan & Knopfler at the Verizon Theater

You mean the Verizon Theater – where, in addition to paying exorbitant ticket prices, they have the gall to charge you an exorbitant price for parking in a lot they control, in the middle of nowhere next to the sewer plant, and for which there is no other demand?

As much as I would enjoy both artists on the same stage, since I’m not a chump I’ll skip it and buy a CD or two or three or twenty instead, and head for the Granada or the Kessler.

I’d enjoy hearing “Little One” by Beck, “Plants and Rags” by PJ Harvey, “People Say” by The Meters or perhaps even a little more Zammuto. Perhaps “Too Late To Topologize” might find it’s way into next week’s show.

How ’bout some Crash Test Dummies – maybe “Superman’s Song” or “The Country Life” off of “The Ghosts That Haunt Me”¹?

Or maybe something off of Van Morison’s new one, “No Plan B” – maybe something other than “Born to SIng” (which is getting a lot of airplay)²?

If you can’t find ’em at Good Records, he’re a coupe of other sources:

Regarding the Crash Test Dummies, I think your audience might like best “The Country Life” – it’s my favorite CTD song, hands down.

    • Ed in Arlington

Another excellent song I recommend of of the CTD’s “The Ghosts That Haunt Me”: “Winter Song”. Strong songwriting and sprightly musicianship as usual.

“Check My Machine” was the B-side of 7″ single “Waterfall” – how the hell they crammed such a long song as “Machine” on that 45rpm still amazes me – I’d drive my parents nuts playing that over and over – they were amazed to find out it was Paul McCartney and that the other side was the “better” side. Ha!
There is a new ELO song out this week – very good, highly recommended – “Point of No Return” from “Mr.Blue Sky: The Very Best of Electric Light Orchestra” – essentially, Jeff Lynne squirreled himself in his home studio and re-recorded very much by himself all his old ELO hits, very much like the Squeeze album “Spot The Difference”, where Glen Tilbrook went in the studio and recreated all Squeeze’s old hits.

I really like the opening to this Flying-Burrito-Brothers-ish country-song; I’ll be curious to find out who it is (♫ “Down in Leatherwood, country love’s gonna steal your mind, and we ain’t never gonna be blue …”).

    Ooh – Blind Willie Johnson!

A recording of his music is on the Pioneer satellite, now on its way out of the solar system.

Make that “the Voyager satellite”, not “Pioneer”.

These might be toughies to find: Dying on the Vine, Mountain Ballad or New York City, off of the Lucky Pierre’s “Cloverleaf”. If you can’t find it at Good Records, you may want to resort to Amazon¹. Then again, maybe you’d rather pick something off of their more-recent 2009 EP “Good Provider”² (apparently available only as MP3 downloads)?
