Monday Morning Roundup

by Stephen Becker 20 Aug 2012 7:29 AM

Today in the roundup: Getting to know Maxwell Anderson, Romney and the arts and checking in on a harmonica convention.

CTA TBD

MORE ON MAXWELL: After learning last month of Maxwell Anderson’s desire to acquire a Da Vinci for the DMA, we’re pretty much convinced of his big plans for the museum, right? A more complete picture of Anderson emerges in a dallasnews.com profile over the weekend. The story gets into what went wrong during his tenure at the Whitney and how he views the DMA’s role in the city. That vision and drive is why DMA board president John Eagle says he hired Anderson. “He was the best guy out there,” he says. “I think he had an unfortunate opportunity at the Whitney. He’s done a fabulous job for us. We couldn’t be happier with him. You’ve got to fasten your seatbelt, though, because Max is a go-getter.”

ROMNEY AND THE ARTS: So where does Mitt Romney stand on federal funding for the arts? In an upcoming interview with Fortune magazine, the Republican nominee says if elected, he would discontinue all government spending on the National Endowment for the Arts and PBS. “Some of these things, like those endowment efforts and PBS, I very much appreciate and like what they do in many cases, but I just think they have to stand on their own rather than receiving money borrowed from other countries, as our government does on their behalf,” he says.

AND ON THE HARP…: Last week about 500 people gathered in Irving for the Society for the Preservation and Advancement of the Harmonica’s 49th annual convention. Channel 5 sent a crew out to report on the event, including the class that combines harmonica playing and beat boxing.
