Art&Seek Jr: Let's Get Extra-Curricular!
by Therese Powell 7 Aug 2012

Get out the calendars! Time to jump into fall with some great extra-curricular activities for the kids.

CTA TBD

Art&Seek Jr. is one mom‘s quest to find activities to end the seemingly endless chorus of the “I’m Bored Blues” while having fun herself. Impossible you say? Check back on Tuesdays for kid-friendly events that are fun for adults, too.

Though the start of the school year is still a few weeks off, the planning, scheduling and signing up for junior’s extra-curricular activities has already begun. I started seeing the posts on Facebook for soccer sign-up a couple of weeks ago. And although we aren’t going to do soccer this fall, I still felt a sense of urgency usually reserved for Christmas shopping. I immediately dropped everything and began looking for the obligatory Saturday morning extra-curricular activity. Lucky for me, Rose isn’t picky about which activities to participate in. As long as she can be a social butterfly, she’s game for just about anything. I’m thinking a combo judo/Irish dancing/mural painting class might be fun. If you’re still looking for some extra fun for the kiddos, check out these favs featured on the Art&Seek calendar:

Got a kid who loves being outdoors? This fall, the Heard Natural Science Museum & Wildlife Sanctuary in McKinney is offering Homeschool & Preschool Natural Science programs. Both programs have plenty of hands-on activities that encourage a connection to nature.

Who doesn't love a little theater?

How about ballet with a twist? Anita N. Martinez Ballet Folklorico is hosting an open house this Saturday for registration for the upcoming year. Your little dancerina can take a free class and take part in other fun activities. I’ve always wanted to twirl in one of those big, colorful skirts.

Too much drama in your house? Try channeling it with one of the many theater classes at Dallas Children’s Theater. Kids from pre-K to high school can sharpen their acting skills or just have fun being a favorite storybook character as theater professionals show them the ropes. Mini thespians get to show off their skills with a class show on the last day.

A Creative Art Studio in Denton has some cool art classes for kids 6 to 13. These are great because they meet in a real art studio so kids can explore all sorts of techniques and media. And better still, they’re on-going, which means you can pay by the class and there’s no commitment. They also do art shows twice a year so kids can show off their masterpieces. Class size is limited, so you’ll need to act fast if you’re interested.
