Afternoon Delight: Johnny Cash Uses Flood to Teach Counting

by Jerome Weeks 26 Mar 2012 12:59 PM

“Five Feet High and Rising” is not Johnny Cash’s description of Big Bird. But on Sesame Street, the song about a flood becomes a lesson on stacking and counting.

Afternoon Delight is a daily diversion for when you’re just back from lunch, but not quite ready to get back to work. Check back weekdays at 1 p.m. for another one.
“Five Feet High and Rising” is not Johnny Cash’s description of Big Bird. It’s Cash’s song, of course (and the title of his 1974 album), based on his family’s experience with a flood when he was a child. But on a classic Sesame Street with Biff, the construction worker, it becomes Cash’s lesson on counting and stacking.
