Psyched about my King Khan and BBQ Show request making it on the show! FYI these guys are a duo, believe it or not. King Khan plays lead guitar and vocals, while BBQ (AKA Mark Sultan) plays rhythm guitar, bass drum, kick drum and tambourine all at once while singing, thusly:

Howdy, thanks for taking our requests!
Speaking of which, please bring unto us some righteous Dred Zeppelin.

BTW: I read that Lightnin’ Hopkins actually believed in “mojo hand” magic. Poor monkey. On that note, I also understand that Jimi Hendrix wrote Voodoo Child after a “day trip” to Zion National Park. Zion, Zion.. ’cause I’m a Voodoo Child..
    Yeah.
I named a dog Zion Voodoo Child. She lived up to her name.

      far out man.
I will see about that Dred. gonna have to pick carefully

      • Jerem69

My son’s real keen on The Immigrant Song version on DeJah Voodoo. Yeah, I misspelled “Dread” My bad..
So, that last tune had me imagining Peewee Herman dancing on a bar in platform shoes. Is that something that I should seek counseling about?
        ;>)

        • It’s OK. What they shoulda called the band anyway. Led Zeppelin misspelled “Lead.” ..

  • I’m getting ready to start a unit called “Music as Literature” in my ENL (formerly ESL) classes. Since I often have the same students more than one year (and because I don’t want to seem COMPLETELY unhip, I change the music we use each year. You are like my personal music finder for new tunes to keep the unit fresh. Thanks, Paul

Shoot, I forgot to mention Chris Whitley. I’m thinking Ode to Joy from the Rocket House disc. Sounding great tonight. Electronica, Ms. Clooney, Wierd Al (Frankie’s son), trip-hop, blues, bring it on, baby!
This show reminds me of a poster I had on my wall in the ’60s. Captioned “Mind of Man – urp!” it was a truly psychedelic wonder to behold. It was drawn to it for it’s graphic 3-D rendering. It featured a guy in the middle of this surreal mess of girls, castles, dragons, fish swimming by in mid-air, Escher-like renderings, just whatever came to the artist’s mind. I truly enjoy the esoteric and am a “seeker of experiences” and that is why I donate to this-here station in the name of the Paul Slavens show. Thanks again Paul.
    Wow, my radio’s glowing.
    Oh, yeah. Vacuum tubes.

Great show, Paul, thanks for playing my request! I love the Magnetic Fields, haven’t heard that one yet

Could you play some Buckethead next week? Specifically,
“Whitewash” from his album Colma (if you’re feeling chill), or “Nun Chucka Kata” from Monsters and Robots (if you’re feeling pumped).

    • Anonymous

sure, as long as its all clean and groovy

    • Jerem69

Yes, Magnetic Fields was most groovy. I’m thinking 10,000 Teslas groovy. That’s a whole lotta Gauss – actually, that’s 100000000 Gauss.

  • bellalola

Loving the show! Heres some suggestions:

    Born to Frustration by James
Hurting for the First Time by Wolfsheim

    Thanks.

Love the show. Sounds great through the old Marantz. I’ve always felt that Concrete Blonde was one of the most underrated bands if its time. The album Group Therapy has a couple of great songs – “When I was a Fool” and “Take me Home”. Hope you like them…

I’ll second the request for Buckethead also.

    • Anonymous

      seconded and passed

    • Tolake

Concrete Blonde was was one of those under-rated bands that never got the attention that they deserved, like: “God Is a Bullet” from ‘Free’ or just about anything from ‘Bloodletting’ starting with the first song, “Bloodletting (The Vampire Song)’.

    • I’m listening through my Marantz, too!!! Yaaaaay kindred receivers!

  • I’m trying to get GibsonGirl to recommend us some of her collection of Arabic inspired trip hop goodies. She had turned me on to some Thievery Corporation stuff (took me to a great show in Dallas a year and some ago). I know she has more cool stuff but I have crummy taste so I want her to pick one…

I not sure what gave me the chills more, the slow motion action of the scene or Pippin singing this song from:
‘The Lord of the rings: The Return of the King’ – ‘The Steward of Gondor’
        Check it out.

  • Think you might be able to find some old Tom Shinness in the archives for next week? Something from his early CD’s “Something Inseparable” or “Many Waters”? That was back when he used to play weekends on the patio of Crescent City Cafe in Deep Ellum. We would catch Tom there and then head over to Dada. Ah, youth!!

    • Anonymous

yikes, unless its available on the internet, I dont have any , sorry.

  • Tolake

Hi Paul, you can play Patti Smith every week.
How about ‘Glitter In Their Eyes’ from ‘Gung Ho’?

    • Anonymous

my personal music picking philosophy will not allow me to play anything every week.
but i could maybe go one more week

      • Jerem69

Could give her a respite and throw on some Stooges next week. Diversity is good. Very good.

David Bowie “I’m Deranged” as an earlier suggestion is good. Probably Bowie’s best song besides “Ashes to Ashes”.

Loved the show tonight. Just out of curiosity, is there anywhere a full playlist gets posted after a show?

  • Tom Gilliland

I listen every Sunday while at work. A 70’s band called Rare Bird had a great song titled “Sympathy” and ” Under Your Wing”. Maybe throw in a little Barefoot Jerry, “If There Were Only Time For Love”. What female band did that beautiful accopella version of The Who’s “Tatto”? Thanks Tom Gilliland

Check out Patrick Watson (the singer of To Build a Home). Really, anything by him is fantastic. But something off Wooden Arms is his best.

  • Ava and C.I.

Why do you play so few women each week?
