THE KIMBELL’S BIG SCORE: The Kimbell Art Museum’s newest acquisition isn’t a painting, but it might be more important. George T. M. Shackelford, an expert in 19th Century European art, was recently named the museum’s deputy director. He comes to the museum from the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, an institution with a much larger collection than the Kimbell’s. But Shackelford says there are similarities between his past and current employers. “The [Kimbell’s] reputation, as being a place that works of art can come to safely, be exhibited correctly, taken care of and be published in an important catalog or publication supporting the exhibition, are the same in both places,” he tells dfw.com.

SOUND AND SCULPTURE: On Friday, the Nasher Sculpture Center presents the next edition of its Soundings: New Music at the Nasher concerts. This one is called “Tradition and Invention” and features a trio of harp, viola and flute. When the Nasher director Jeremy Strick wanted to add a music series to the center, he picked Seth Knopp, a member of the Peabody Trio and artistic director of the chamber music program Yellow Barn. The two talk about their vision for Sounding in an interview with theaterjones.com.

BEST IN STATE: The Texas Institute of Letters has released the list of nominees for this year’s awards. To be eligible, an author must live in the state for at least two years and write about Texas. Prizes range from $500 to $6,000 for the Jesse H. Jones Award for Fiction. And now, on to the list.
