Thursday Morning Roundup

by Stephen Becker 9 Feb 2012 8:04 AM

Today in the roundup: Teaching the Giant cast to talk Texan, a command performance on stage in Fort Worth and local music notes.

CTA TBD

TALKING ‘GIANT’: With the Dallas Theater Center’s current production, we seem to be interested in all things Giant these days. So did you know this – a longtime Dallas resident was actually the man charged with teaching Rock Hudson and James Dean to talk Texan for the movie. Of the two actors, Robert Hinkle says Dean’s accent was the real deal. “I’ll tell you why,” he tells Steve Blow. “He kept his accent all the time — even when we were off work and just hanging around. Rock would put his on only when he was acting.” Giant runs through Feb. 19.

COMMAND PERFORMANCE: Ebony Marshall-Oliver has a lot to do in Jubilee Theatre’s Pretty Fire. That’s because playwright Charlayne Woodard’s autobiographical story is a one-woman show. But judging from the reviews, Marshall-Oliver more than holds her own. “Pretty Fire is a demanding piece, a one-woman show in which the actress must play multiple roles and transition seamlessly between them for one-and-a-half hours,” Kris Noteboom writes on theaterjones.com. “And to that end, Marshall-Oliver exceeds any pre-conceived expectations.” Mark Lowry was also impressed. “She has grown into one of Jubilee’s more skilled actors, and as this story dictates, she uses the power of expression and vocal tones to play a multitude of characters,” he writes on dfw.com. Catch Pretty Fire through Feb. 26.

MUSIC BITS: St. Vincent has a new video for her song “Cheerleader.” (DC 9 at Night) … Fort Worth Weekly reviews discs by jazz combo Flipside, Bedford nerdcore rapper Doug Funnie and local alt-rockers Bravo Zulu. (fwweekly.com) … Kelly Clarkson receives a little local love (dfw.com)
