Friday Morning Roundup

by Stephen Becker 6 Jan 2012 8:04 AM

Today in the roundup: Local music bits, the challenge for recent college grads in the arts and Kathy Griffin on why she chose comedy.

CTA TBD

UNEMPLOYMENT IN THE ARTS: If you’re studying for a degree in an arts-related field, be prepared to have a tough time finding a job. That’s what a study released this week found. Among recent college graduates, unemployement rates were highest for those with degrees in architecture (13.9 percent), the arts (11.1 percent) and humanities (9.4 percent).

MUSIC BITS: 99.5 FM’s Charla Corn talks about being a DJ by day and performer by night. (fwweekly.com) … Dirk covers Britney Spears. (DC9 at Night) … Dallas’ The Angelus goes for a dramatic sound on its first LP. (Front Row) … Norah Jones names her favorite Texas artists. (Texas Monthly)

QUOTABLE: “What I love about stand-up is it’s the one venue where I don’t need permission. If you want to be on television, you have to have a network like your show and buy it. But with live stand-up, I get to go to Grand Prairie and be completely uncensored, no holds barred, and just try to make everybody laugh. There’s nothing like it.”

– Kathy Griffin, in an interview with dfw.com ahead of her peformance tonight at the Verizon Theatre.
