Liz Mikel, Shooting Hoops

The basketball-playing cast of Lysistrata Jones — known when it played the Dallas Theater Center as Give It Up! — needed some coaching in the fine craft of layups and dunks. So they all visited with a retired NBA all-star.

The NYTimes caught up with the court-training of the cast of Lysistrata Jones, aka Give It Up!, the Dallas Theater Center b-ball musical now bound for Broadway.  The actors in the show about a men’s college squad that is humiliated by the cheerleaders into actually trying to win includes the Mighty Mighty Liz Mikel of the DTC acting troupe playing the cheeleaders’  inspiration-goddess-muse-madame. The show begins previews Nov. 12 at the Walter Kerr Theatre, but it was thought the cast needed some polishing in the craft of layups and dunks, so they got a five-day basketball camp at a Sports Club/LA coached by retired NBA all-star Chris Mullin.

And yes, there’s a photo of the Mighty Mikel furiously dribbling down the court.
